Treating My Own Mental Illness Without Medications

For five and a half years, four times each day I took medication for schizophrenia. However for twenty years I've been off all the pills, and I've used a new method of treatment.

In April of 1971 I experienced a seven-day episode of mental and physical hyperactivity.

I didn't eat and I scarcely slept. I covered reams of paper with unusual writings and drawings.

My family became very concerned, and I was taken by ambulance to the Los Angeles County Hospital.

A psychiatrist there diagnosed schizophrenia. I was put on stelazine, a potent antipsychotic medication.

I took another medication, cogentin, and a third medication, elavil.

I was taken off cogentin a few weeks later, and I was on stelazine, elavil, and valium for over five years.

Each day I found it very difficult to get out of bed and face the day. I used coffee to help me feel less drowsy.

The coffee was so bitter, to make it palatable I added about a teaspoon of sugar and about an eighth of a cup of whole milk to each cup.

I got through the years by drinking about twelve cups of coffee each day.

The psychiatrist didn't experiment with other psychotropic medications. He just kept me on the stelazine. Without coffee I was a zombie.

In November of 1976, I went off all my medications and the coffee, cold turkey.

I did this because I felt so much better one morning after I'd forgotten to take the medications the night before!

I figured I didn't need the medications any more. Hallelujah!

Also, I was so rotund in the belly I couldn't tie my own shoes. My wife had to tie them for me.

So I threw off my psychopharmacological chains, and that was the beginning of a new life for me!

I moved to a healthier geographical region, and I put myself on an experimental program.

It's taken me years to work on this program, and it's been largely trial and error that has brought me to this point.

I would like to work with some medical scientists, or some other persons who are qualified to supervise a research project, and see if what I did can help some other schizophrenic persons the way this program has helped me.

I also was physically ill with bursitis, arthritis, irregular heartbeat, sweating and fainting spells, low blood sugar, mood swings, and sometimes violent temper, before I treated myself in the special way I introduce.

So if you are interested in a new approach to this ages-old medical problem, I encourage you to investigate.

All this is wonderful to tell. And I hope that soon I will be helping other people learn to do the same thing to treat themselves without taking any medicine.
