In 1978 I discovered a new idea and I used this idea to treat my own autism without using medications.
Before I started school I spent hours each day examining physical objects and manipulating them.
I took special delight in nails I picked out of the fireplace, and burnt match heads, and ladies' colored belts and shoulderpads.
I made collections of these objects and spent hours a day arranging them into patterns.
My mother read to me for hours each day, and I enjoyed listening to her read poetry.
In conversation, though, I couldn't keep up with the flow of ordinary conversation.
At school, when nonhandicapped children talked, I couldn't think of anything to say.
I didn't inflect my voice or use gestures or make eye contact when I did talk.
Until I was in college I began every day by rocking on all fours on my bed and humming a tune over and over and over.
It didn't rain a lot where I lived, and when it rained the sounds greatly excited me. When it rained I couldn't concentrate on anything else.
When it rained hard I would stop whatever I was doing and run outside and dash around in the torrent.
I would often stand by a water pipe and watch the water pouring from it and making water sounds all around.
Even as a college student, my knowledge about people and society was exceedingly limited.
This lack of rapport with people made it impossible for me to find long-term employment.
In 1978, at the age of forty, I discovered a new idea and I used this idea to treat my own autism and social isolation without using medications.
This treatment has had remarkable results.
All this is wonderful to tell. And I hope that soon I will be helping other people learn to do the same thing to treat themselves without taking any medicine.
Come back again soon and have a nice day!
